The database, Viatimages, contains digitizations of both travel images and travel literature concerning the Alps. Standard search, geo-search, and advanced search are available. Geo-search gives the possibility to choose from extensive lists of regions, cities, valleys, mountain ranges, passes, mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and glaciers. It then shows all material relating to this place, while also linking it to the exact location on Google Earth. In addition, it is possible to choose a specific book. Advanced search – possible for both image or corpus – contains a wide range of search options, including for example image, people, illustrator, publication year, century of travel, language, technique, and place.

The Viaticalpes Project is a sub-set of the Viatimages database. It assembles and studies the illustrations of the Alps that were produced in travel literature between 1540 and 1860 ca. From a total of 850 books (containing about 11.000 images) that have been inventoried for the period under study, the Viaticalpes team has selected 100 representative books. A total of around 3000 images taken from these works are put in a database. They are described, indexed, geolocalized, and linked to texts that describe them. Viaticalpes is a research project of the Université de Lausanne with the support of the Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique.

Material is shown in high resolution and zoom options are available. Each image also contains information on the image, the book that it comes from, and the exact place that is shown. It also shows the digitized version of the book from which it is taken, with the possibility to download this as pdf.

The images are freely available for private use if mentioning: .
