Thesaurus Latino-Lituanicus

Thesaurus Latino-Lituanicus. Combined Latin-Lithuanian Dictionary from the 17th to the 21st Century is a database which contains several Latin-Lithuanian dictionaries published between the 17th and 21st centuries. It is therefore a useful tool for studying and research into (the history of) Latin philology, composing Latin verse, etcetera.

The website contains four Latin-Lithuanian dictionaries:

  • Konstantinas Sirvydas. Dictionarium trium linguarum (1642)
  • Simonas Daukantas. Žodrodys (1838)
  • Kazimieras Jokantas. Lotyniškai lietuviškas žodynas (1936)
  • Kazimieras Kuzavinis. Lotynų-lietuvių kalbų žodynas. Dictionarium Latino-Lituanicum (2007)

When entering a search request all four dictionaries are searched simultaneously, and results are listed per dictionary. Results are displayed in edition, but can also be seen in the scanned facsimiles of the original books. Original cover, title pages and/or preface of all four dictionaries can also be consulted online. The dictionary from 2007 can be downloaded.

Various advanced-search options are available: search either Latin headword or full text, specify morphological part of speech, specify syllable lengths, include anceps syllables or not, and specify number of syllables. This means that ‘Latin words in this resource can be found not only as in the usual computer dictionaries, but also by their morphological or prosodic criteria. For example, you can find all tetrasyllabic interjections; all feminine nouns of the fourth declension; all semi-deponent verbs; all adjectives starting or ending with specified letters whose metrical shape is dactylic, or iambic, or any other; and so on.’ It is also possible to use the Lithuanian meaning of a Latin word as a search criterion.

The project was sponsored by the Lithuanian Research Council in 2010 and 2011 under the National Development Programme for Lithuanian Studies 2009–2015. It was carried out by the Digital Philology Centre, Faculty of Philology, University of Vilnius.
