In Mozart’s Words

The website In Mozart’s Words provides “multilingual access to an annotated version of the voluminous correspondence of Mozart and his family - approximately 1,400 letters - that will progressively be made available online on this website. The website offers i) a univocal database of all references to people, places and musical works contained in the letters, facilitating the systematic search of all cited occurrences, and ii) access to background materials such as reviews, newspapers, documents, objects, paintings, engravings, and books as a corollary to the historical-critical annotations.”

The interface of In Mozart’s Words is available in French, English, German, and Italian. Search options include Fulltext, People, Places, Works, and Annotations. The browsing function is arranged according to Chronology, People, Places, Works, From/To. The letters are transcribed in French, English, German, and Italian. Each letter has a link to the ‘German transcription’ (where users will see the original German spelling next to the modernized German spelling) as well as with a link to the ‘Manuscript version’ (which provides an image of the original document, as well as a transcription). The manuscript version is hosted by The Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg (MFS). In Mozart’s Words was initially started in 2006 and has been supported by a number of funds and individuals.
