Gutenberg Digital

Gutenberg digital provides a digitized version of the vellum Gutenberg Bible that is kept at the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen. This bible was printed in 1454. All 1282 pages of the two volumes have been scanned in at high resolution. In addition to the Gutenberg Bible, this website also provides access to two other documents: the Model Book for painting manuscripts which was used to illuminate the Göttingen Bible (ca.1450), and the ‘Helmasperger Notarial Instrument’, a document (dating 6 November 1455) which records the legal dispute between Gutenberg and his backer Johannes Fust.

The Gutenberg Bible can be browsed by bible book. Single pages can be downloaded in JPEG format. The Göttingen Model Book consists of 12 double pages, which can be downloaded in JPEG format. Each page is accompanied by an English translation. Helmasperger’s Notarial Instrument is shown as a facsimile, accompanied by a transcription of the original and an English translation. The facsimile can be downloaded in JPEG format.

The website also contains explanatory texts about Gutenberg and his life, the early period of letterpress printing and its impact.
