The European Library Historic Newspapers Browser

This Historic Newspapers Browser has been developed by The European Library (see EHPS entry on The European Library here) as part of the Europeana Newspapers project (see EHPS entry on Europeana here). It enables users to perform full-text searches in millions of newspaper pages from the past centuries.

The amount of content in the browser continues to grow rapidly. By the end of January 2015, the browser will contain around 30 million newspaper pages from 25 libraries in 23 European countries. Users will be able to search the full text of more than 10 million historic newspaper pages, named entity recognition in Dutch, German, and French to enable searches of names of people and geographic places, and metadata records of over 20 million historic newspaper pages. This will help users quickly search for specific articles, people and locations mentioned within the newspaper. The  project is funded under the European Commission’s CIP 2007 – 2013. For the most recent news from the project see the project's blog. You can also read about the 6 main goals, and use the project glossary.

It is possible to search the material (with the possibility to filter by library, date, or language), or to browse it by date, newspaper title, and geographic map. Pages are shown in high definition, with a transcription next to the original (made with OCR).
