ETH Zurich – E-Pics

E-Pics is ETH Zurich's platform for digital and digitized photographs and images. ETH Zurich is a university for technology and the natural sciences. Collections, archives, institutes, and units of ETH Zurich, as well as external partners manage and present their image holdings on this website. In December 2015 the following collections were available online (new images are constantly being uploaded):

  • Image Archive Online. Image archive ETH-Bibliothek, about 320.000 images online. They relate to the following topics:
    • Scientific and technical history of Switzerland and of ETH Zurich
    • Collection of features, images of countryside/places and aerial photos focusing on Switzerland
    • Swissair photo archive
    • Archive of the photographic agency Comet Photo AG
  • Old and rare prints. Rare Books ETH-Bibliothek, about 10.000 images online. The books, illustrated books, and journals date from the second half of the 15th century to the early 20th century. They focus on mathematics, technology, architecture, and natural sciences. This database contains images of selected individual pages from these works.
  • Animals, plants and biotopes. About 20.000 images online. This collection contains professional images by nature photographer Albert Krebs from Winterthur.
  • Max Frisch-Archive. About 4000 images that document the life of Swiss architect and writer Max Frisch in photographic form.
  • Events. Current images involving the development of the locations as well as of life at ETH Zurich.
  • Fotostiftung Schweiz: collection online. A visual cross-section of the history of Swiss photography from the mid-19th century to today.
  • Earth science collections.
  • Rust fungi of the Zurich Herbaria: 57.000 specimens online.

Basic search and various filter options are provided for each collection of sources. The majority of the images can be viewed publicly. A large number of images is available for download (in JPEG or TIFF format, and accompanied by metadata). High-resolution images can be ordered.
