David Rumsey Map Collection

David Rumsey is president of Cartography Associates, a digital publishing company based in San Francisco, and is chairman of Luna Imaging, a provider of enterprise software for online image collections. His collection of North and South American historical maps and related cartographic materials, with more than 150.000 maps, is one of the largest private map collections in the United States. It focuses on rare 18th and 19th century maps of North and South America, but it also has maps of Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and the world. It includes atlases, wall maps, globes, school geographies, pocket maps, books of exploration, maritime charts, and a variety of cartographic materials including pocket, wall, children’s, and manuscript maps. Items range in date from about 1700 to the 1950s.

In December 2014 there are over 55.000 digitized maps available on this website. The site is updated monthly.

Under ‘View collection’ a large number of ways to view the collection is offered, such as browsing the entire collection in the LUNA browser, basic or advanced search in the catalogue data, browsing by various categories, viewing a part of the collection in Google Maps or in Google Earth, or viewing maps in a 3D GIS browser. Through georeferencing it is possible to overlay historical maps on modern maps or other historical maps. Georeferenced maps can be viewed by image or by location.

The images are shown in high definition. Zoom options are available. Multiple maps can be viewed side by side. Users can also create their own collections of maps by saving groups of images. Extensive catalogue data accompany each image. Images can be downloaded in various formats, included in very high definition.
