Blockbücher aus bayerischen Sammlungen

Block books from the Bavarian collections

Blockbücher aus bayerischen Sammlungen is a digital library project from the Münchener Digitalisierungszentrum (MDZ). It deels with 15th Century woodcut-illustrated books which were produced relatively in small sizes. These books formed a transition between an illuminated manuscript and an illustrated printed book. They belong to the rarest and most valuable libraries worldwide. Until today block books were used for art history and philological research and are raising numerous questions aboutir their dating, their regional origins and their relation within handwritten and printed graphic image and text traditions. The scientific digitalization of the block books, however, was difficult because of their very problematic conservation status . As the paper leaves often were damaged researchers were only able to examine the books exceptionally.

The project has sought to widen the range of block books in 14 Bavarian collections (libraries and museums, state, church and private property) and offers a high level of bibliographic description as fully integrated as possible with the high-quality digital images. In three years time, over 90 block books and book fragments will be digitized after being cataloged.

Participating libraries are the following:

Hofbibliothek Aschaffenburg
Staats- und Stadtbibliothek Augsburg
Staatsbibliothek Bamberg
Universitätsbibliothek Erlangen
Pfarrei St. Martin Kaufbeuren
Stadtbibliothek Memmingen
Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München
Universitätsbibliothek München
Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg
Kirchen-Kapitelsbibliothek Schwabach
