Biblioteca storica di Studi Adriatici – Istituto di Scienze Marine (ISMAR, CNR), Venice

On this website it is possible to consult the books, maps, journals, manuscripts, images, and documents that are present in the Palazzina Canonica in Venice. Various research institutions have been located here from 1932 onwards: the Regio Comitato Talassografico Italiano, the Istituto di Studi Adriatici, the Osservatorio della Pesca Marittima, the Istituto di Biologia del Mare, until in 2003 they merged into the Istituto di Scienze Marine (ISMAR), which is part of Italy’s National Research Council (CNR), and which has its headquarters at the Arsenal in Venice.

The most important part of its library, namely the collection of the Istituto di Studi Adriatici, contains ca. 1650 volumes, 109 old maps, and unpublished manuscripts and images. The books deal with the history of the Republic of Venice and its relations with the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. They date mainly from the 17th century until the period after the Second World War. The maps show the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea over a period of three centuries.

The material can be browsed according to author, title, or date. In addition, it is possible to search in title, subject, creator, description, publisher, date, or full text. Some of the primary sources are available in the original version, others in a more recent edition. The books have been digitized, while the maps have not only been digitized but also georeferenced, in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture (IUAV, Venice) and the Biblioteca Marciana. It is planned that other archival material, including also photographs, will be added in the future. Material can be downloaded in pdf or epub format.
