Waterlands Archief

Waterlands Archief. Centrum voor regionaal historisch onderzoek is the historical documentation center of the region Waterland in the Netherlands (based in Purmerend). Its collection includes:

  • A collections of postcards, photographs, newpapers, magazines, and documentation regarding Waterland
  • The archives of the cities of Beemster, Edam-Volendam, Landsmeer, Purmerend, Watereland, Wormerland, Zeevang, and their predecessors
  • The records and archives of regional water boards, notaries, churches, companies, associations, families, and individuals

An increasing number of documents is being made available online, such as photographs, postcards, newspapers, and population registers. These can be found in the following sections of the website:

  • The section ‘Voorouders’ contains a database of people born in the region Waterland.
  • The section ‘Afbeeldingen en kaarten’ in August 2014 contained over 41.000 digitized images. These include postcards, photographs, maps, drawings, images, and technical drawings. They can be browsed by type of material, period, geographical place, creator, or subject. Basic search in the entire collection is also possible. Images are shown in high definition with a watermark, but they can also be downloaded (in JPEG format) in low definition without watermark. The images are accompanied by a detailed record.
  • The section ‘Kranten’ gives access to ten newspapers from the period 1854-1944. Basic search in the full text of this collection is possible. In addition, newspapers can be browsed by individual newspaper and, within each newspaper, chronologically. They are shown in high definition. Each separate page can be downloaded as JPEG or PDF.
