The Rembrandt Database

The Rembrandt Database is an inter-institutional research resource for information and documentation on paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) – or attributed to him, either now or in the past – in museums around the world. In August 2015 the website was still in the development stage: the contents and functionalities of this website are being improved and expanded continuously.

In August 2015 the website had over 9.900 files online, concerning 176 paintings in 25 collections. Under ‘Paintings’ these paintings can be found. Various filter options are possible.

For each painting various types of documentation are available, such as written documentation, infrared examination, radiographic examination, and history of conservation and research. Images of the paintings are shown in very high definition, either in colour or in black and white.

The Rembrandt Database is a joint initiative of the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) and the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague, the Netherlands. Its content is provided by a range of partner institutions around the world. The Rembrandt Database is supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York.
