The National Library of Wales / Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru

The National Library of Wales / Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru has made part of its collection available online. Under ‘Digital gallery’, various types of sources can be found. In November 2014, the following categories were available:

  • Manuscripts
  • Archives
  • Printed material
  • Sound and video
  • Pictures
  • Maps
  • Photographs
  • Exhibitions
  • Wales remembers 1914-1918

Extensive information is given on each of these categories.

Material dates from the Middle Ages until the present day. Many different subjects are treated, for instance: landscape painting, Welsh charters from the Middle Ages, medieval manuscripts on scientific topics, interviews with Welsh rugby stars from the 1950s and 1960s, 19th-century photographs of people in Wales, 18th-century maps, etcetera.

The material can be browsed according to type. In addition, it is possible to do a basic search in the collections. It depends on the type of material how the images are shown and in what format. For example, drawings can be downloaded in JPEG format, while medieval archival material is shown both in the digitized version of the original (downloadable in JPEG format) and in modern English translation.
