The Museum of English Rural Life - MERL

The Museum of English Rural Life (MERL), in cooperation with the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, holds a collection of countryside-related resources. The museum "houses the most comprehensive national collection of objects, books and archives relating to the history of food, farming and the countryside." Digitised images dating between 1920 and 1965 and covering this period of change and upheaval in the history of the English countryside life, such as World War II, have been digitised and are openly accessible.

Images are in JPEG format at 400px × 394px. A free text search option, as well as advanced search options are provided through Enterprise, the digital search engine of the University of Reading.

The MERL is funded by the University of Reading and HEFCE. "The Digitisation of Countryside Images Project was funded by JISC as part of the Enriching Digital Resources programme, a strand of the Digitisation programme."
