Les manuscrits de Madame Bovary

The Bibliothèque municipale de Rouen (municipal library) holds all scripts, drafts, and manuscripts of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, which were written between 1851 and 1857. Les manuscrits de Madame Bovary contains the digitized version of this material.

This is a gift to the City made in 1914 by Flaubert's niece Caroline Franklin Grout. The City and the University of Rouen created an hypertext to publish the entire corpus of manuscripts of this work. All images of folios and transcriptions are proposed online respecting the original classification and the state of the text from the first drafts to a final edition of the novel. (Images are available in JPEG formats and DjVu). This project is connected to a wider project maintained by the University of Rouen on Gustave Flaubert, 1821-1880.

In the category ‘Feuilleter’, material can be browsed according to type of source (plans and scripts, draft, final autograph, or copyist’s version) and folio number. In addition, a modern edition of the entire book is available under ‘Consulter – Roman.’ It is also possible to search in the entire corpus present on the website, under ‘Consulter – Recherche.’ Search results can be further limited according to part of the book, or type of material (draft, plans and scripts, final autograph, copyist’s version, or edited text). For each page it is possible to visualize the digitized manuscript, the transcription, or both at the same time. Zoom options are available for the digitized manuscripts.

Les manuscrits de Madame Bovary is the result of a collaboration between the Bibliothèque municipale de Rouen and the University of Rouen (Centre Flaubert, laboratory LITIS, ex PSI), with the support of the Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, the Conseil régional de Haute-Normandie, and the Fondation Bettencourt-Schueller.
