Internet Shakespeare Editions

Internet Shakespeare Editions (ISE), existing since 1996, provides access to open-access, peer-reviewed Shakespeare resources. In addition to scholarly materials and items of general interest, there are also sections containing primary sources.

Under ‘The Library’, Shakespeare’s works can be found: fully-edited plays and poems, critical and reference materials, and an exploration of the context of Shakespeare’s writing. In addition, some works by other authors from the same period can be found, such as other English works from the same period, or an English translation of Machiavelli’s The Prince and of Plutarch’s Lives. The editions are peer-reviewed (with the exception of works in the ‘Annex’, that have been proofread but not fully reviewed). Both modern editions and transcriptions of the originals can be found. For some works there are also facsimiles of the original printed works (separate pages can be downloaded in JPEG format). Various search options are available within each text. It is possible to compare different copies or facsimiles and transcriptions on the same screen.

The section entitled ‘The Theater’ showcases and reviews the wide variety of Shakespeare performances on stage and film. It contains materials from over 1000 film and stage productions related to Shakespeare’s works: for example, director’s notes, images of stage and costume design, performance stills, posters, interviews, and magazines. Various browse and search options are available.

All material is freely available to everyone, but by logging in extra features become available, such as viewing a print-ready version of each page.

The website is supported by the University of Victoria, Friends of the ISE, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
