Folger Shakespeare Library

The Folger Shakespeare Library, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, houses a large collection of Shakespeare materials as well as collections of other rare Renaissance books, manuscripts, and works of art. Its website contains much information concerning events at the Folger Institute (a center for advanced study and collections-focused research in the humanities at the Folger Shakespeare Library) and concerning resources.

Three sections of the website contain digitalised primary sources:

  • Digital Image Collection (to be found under ‘Use the collection’). This collection offers online access to over 50.000 images from the Folger Shakespeare Library collection, including books, theater memorabilia, manuscripts, and art.

Users can show multiple images side-by-side, zoom in and out, view cataloging information when available, export thumbnails, and construct persistent URLs linking back to items or searches. The collection can be browsed in its entirety, or according to categories (‘what’ – subject, ‘where’ – place, ‘who’ – people, ‘when’ – date). Collections can be searched both one at a time, or more collections simultaneously. For each collection specific ‘advanced search’-options are available. Each image is accompanied by a short description, and can be downloaded as JPG-file.

  • Folger Bindings Image Collection (to be found under ‘Use the Collection’). This provides access to images and descriptions of bindings from the rare book and manuscript collections of the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Just as for the Digital Image Collection, the Bindings Image Collection can be browsed in its entirety, or according to categories (‘what’ – subject, ‘where’ – place, ‘who’ – people, ‘when’ – date). Collections can be searched both one at a time, or more collections simultaneously. For each collection specific ‘advanced search’-options are available. Each image is accompanied by a short description, and can be downloaded as JPG-file.

  • Folger Digital Texts (to be found under ‘Discover Shakespeare’). These are digital texts of Shakespeare’s plays, taken from the Folger Shakespeare Library editions which were completed in 2010 (edited by Mowat and Werstine, published by Simon & Schuster). The texts also contain a synopsis, a list of characters, and notes. Search options include the ability to search for a phrase or word in one play at a time, or in all plays. Texts can be downloaded in PDF format.
