Einstein Archives Online

Einstein Archives Online provides online access to the scientific and non-scientific manuscripts of Albert Einstein (1879-1955) held by the Albert Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. These papers include material relating to the special and general theories of relativity, the quantum theory and quantum mechanics, and the unified field theory in the field of physics; pacifism, militarism, fascism, nationalism, McCarthyism, world government and nuclear disarmament in the field of politics; Jewish identity, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict in the field of Jewish affairs. The website also gives access to the Einstein Archive Database, containg information on the items in the Albert Einstein Archives. The website is divided in the following categories:

  • Digitized manuscripts. In December 2014, about 7000 high-quality digitized images of Einstein’s writings can be viewed and browsed. Some of them are accompanied by annotated transcriptions and translations. These are searchable as full text.
  • Finding aid. This is a comprehensive description of the entire repository of Einstein’s personal papers held at the Hebrew University.
  • Archival Database. In December 2014, this gives direct access to the 80.000 records of Einstein and Einstein-related documents in the original and the supplementary archive. They pertain to Einstein’s scientific and non-scientific writings, professional and personal correspondence, notebooks, travel diaries, personal documents, and third-party items.
  • Gallery. Some related images are available here, sorted thematically.

Basic and advanced search in the entire collection are possible. Images are shown in high definition. Zoom options are available.

This project is the product of the joint cooperative effort of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The Library Authority of the Albert Einstein Archives, and of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.
