Det løfterike landet. Norsk utvandring til Amerika og norsk-amerikansk historie 1825-2000

Det løfterike landet. Norsk utvandring til Amerika og norsk-amerikansk historie 1825-2000 (‘The promise of America. Norwegian emigration to America and Norwegian-American history 1825-2000’) is a website with various resources about Norwegian emigration to the USA and Canada, and about Norwegian-American culture and history. The website contains a selection of books, book excerpts, entire articles, America letters, photographs and prints, film clips, and excerpts from radio and television broadcasts.

Primary sources can be found in various sections of the website:

  • The section ‘Amerikabrev’ contains more than 500 letters written in the period 1850-1930, plus America letters from magazines and books. They are shown in a modern edition.
  • The section ‘Fotografieer og trykk’ contains photos, prints, and paintings about Norwegian-American life. There are also facsimiles of newspapers and magazine covers as well as other items, such as postage stamps. The items can be downloaded in JPG format.
  • The section ‘Film og lyd’ contains sound recordings and motion pictures about Norwegian Americans in the twentieth century.

The material can also be searched, by going through two different databases: a bibliographical database and a full-text database. Search results include both primary sources and historiography.

The website is a result of a cooperation between Oslo College, the National Library of Norway, the Norwegian Emigrant Museum, and the Norwegian Directorate for Public and School Libraries. It is managed by the National Library, Oslo division.
