The Copiale Cypher

The Copiale Cipher is a digital rendition of an encoded manuscript that can be dated back to 1760-1780. Transcription, transliteration and decipherment brought to light a German text related to an 18th century secret society, namely the "oculist order".

Images of the manuscript can be viewed online or downloaded in various qualities (from 150dpi to 400dpi). A deciphered German text, a transcription, and an English translation (in .txt, .docx, .pdf format) are available, as well.

"The digital edition of the Copiale Cypher was supported in part by the US National Foundation grant 0904684, and in part by Uppsala University Vice Chancellor's special grant as well as the Faculty of Languages at Uppsala University."
