The Carlyle Letters Online

The Carlyle Letters Online is a project that contains over 10.000 letters written by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) and Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801-1866). The Carlyles, living in London, established themselves at the center of a growing circle of influential artists, philosophers, writers, historians, politicians, and editors. They corresponded with important British, American, and European thinkers and writers of the 19th century, but the majority of the letters gathered here were written to family members.

The letters can be browsed by date, recipient, subject, or volume. Basic and advanced search are also possible. Letters are shown in modern transcription, and contain footnotes. Extensive introduction, chronology, list of letters written to the Carlyles, and references are provided for each volume.

The project is an initiative of Duke University Press, based on the Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle.
