Bundesarchiv – Digitale Bildarchiv

The Digitale Bildarchiv des Bundesarchivs is the digital picture archive of the German Federal Archives (‘Bundesarchiv’). It has ca. 11 million still pictures, aerial photographs, and posters from modern German history. The oldest photographs date from the 1860s. Most pictures show events and/or persons, in particular from the Weimar Republic (1919-1933), Nazi Reich (1933-1945), GDR (1945/49-1990), and Federal Republic of Germany (from 1945/49 onwards). As of December 2015 more than 200.000 pictures from the Federal Archives are kept in the database. Since November 2008 also photos of the Federal Press and Information Office (‘Bundespresseamt’) are integrated in this database.

Basic and advanced search are possible. In addition, it is possible to browse the images by subject, person, or locality. Pictures are shown with a watermark. Download of reproducible pictures without watermark is possible only for registered researchers and by payment.
