Antique Maps of Iceland - Forn Islandskort

Antique maps of Iceland (Forn Islandskort) is a digital library of "all antique maps of Iceland (older than 1900) that are in the collections of the National and University Library of Iceland and the Central Bank of Iceland. Maps have been converted to a digital format ... A short historical description in Icelandic and English is available for most of the maps. They are based on the book Kortasaga Íslands (A history of cartography of Iceland) by Haraldur Sigurðsson. Two manuscript maps from The Royal Library in Denmark were added to the site."

The project is done in collaboration with NDLC (Nordic Digital Library Center) which is one of the information centers of NORDINFO (The Nordic Council for Scientific Information). NDLC is a department within the National Library of Norway. The National and University Library of Iceland did all work involving the maps themselves, such as photographing, historical research, classifying and cataloging. The photographs were then sent to NDLC, where they were converted to a digital format for the DjVu Browser Plug-in. The library is responsible for preserving the maps and making them available through the Internet."
